Grannies Sugar Cookies – Great for Any Holiday!
These cookies are low on sweetness, and almost cake like. They are best with a simple vanilla frosting and sprinkles on top. (My recipe is better than Loft House brand, because we use real butter!)
7 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. salt
5 tsp. baking powder
2 cups butter or shortening (butter always works better or you can do half butter and half shortening – do not use margarine though it ruins the texture)
2 cups sugar
4 eggs beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup milk
Cream the shortening and sugar. Add eggs, vanilla and milk and stir thoroughly. Combine with flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well. If dough seems too dry to roll out, add a little more milk. Roll dough on lightly floured board as thin as you like and cut into desired shapes.
Bake in 375 degree oven for 10-12 minutes. Makes about 21 dozen cookies.
Ice with creamy vanilla or cream cheese icing. Cover with candy sprinkles.
